Austria’s role in European History was to serve as the archduchy and administrative center for the Holy Roman Empire. In the late 1800’s Austria established a union with Hungary, and formed the Austria-Hungarian Empire. Austria is ruled by a parliamentary representative government with a President as the head of state and a Chancellor as the head of government. Austria officially became a country on November 12, 1918.
