Austria is officially known as the Republic of Austria. This Central European country is surrounded by the Alps. Austria’s role in European History was to serve as the archduchy and administrative center for the Holy Roman Empire. In the late 1800’s Austria established a union with Hungary, and formed the Austria-Hungarian Empire. Austria is ruled by a parliamentary representative government with a President as the head of state and a Chancellor as the head of government. Austria officially became a country on November 12, 1918.
