The Caribbean island country of Barbados is located in the West Indies. Spanish explorers, who brought wild boars, originally claimed the island in the 15th century. In 1625, Barbados was taken over by the British, and was established as a colony in 1627. Barbados became the center of the English African slave trade until 1807, when slavery was outlawed. On November 30 1966, Barbados was established as an independent state of the British Commonwealth.
