Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a sovereign state located in Western Europe. Originally, this area was referred to as part of the Low Countries, and was a prosperous center of commerce and culture throughout the Middle Ages until the 17th century. From the 16th-19th centuries, many battles were fought between differing European powers, giving Belgium the nickname the “Battlefield of Europe.” Following the Belgian Revolution, on October 4, 1830, Belgium seceded from the Netherlands and was established as a country.
