Known to be the birthplace of vodun (voodoo) is the West African country of Dahomey, now called Benin. This region of Africa was referred to as the Slave Coast during the 17th century, as many African’s were enslaved and shipped to the New World via the Eurpoean slave trade. This farming country produces and exports cotton and palm oil. Benin became a country on August 1, 1960 and was named the Republic of Benin in 1991.
