It is believed these islands were discovered in 1499 by Spanish explorers, and later settled by the Dutch in 1636. Originally these 3 islands were part of the Netherland Antilles, and are now part of a special municipality as of 2010. East access to island reefs have made this territory a popular scuba and snorkeling destination.
