The country of Belize was founded on September 21, 1981. It is believed the Myan Civilization called this area in Central America home sometime between 1500 BC to 1200 AD. In 1638 both the British and Spanish claimed this land, however in 1840, Belize became British Honduras, and then as a British Crown colony in 1862. In 1981, Belize was established as an independent country.
