Congo was founded on November 17, 1879. The Congo, also known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, (the DR Congo) is a Central African country. From 1971-1997, the Congo was called Zaire. The territory of the Congo dates back to around 90,000 years ago, where Central African foragers roamed the land. Located in the Congo Basin, mountain gorillas, elephants and lions make the Congo their home.
