In 1648, Switzerland became independent from the Holy Roman Empire. Switzerland’s policy of armed neutrality dates back to the 16th century, and has not fought in a war since 1815. Switzerland is the birthplace of one of the world’s best known humanitarian organizations, the Red Cross.
