Chile also lays claim to a few islands in the Pacific Ocean, Easter Island in Oceania, and a portion of Antarctica. The mainland of Chile was conquered and colonized by Spain in the mid 16th century, replacing the Incan Empire. On September 18, 1810, the Republic of Chile was established and in 1818, Chile declared its independence from Spain.
