Located in Central Europe is the Czech Republic, commonly called Czechia. This region has undergone many name changes. In the late 9th century, this country region was known as the Duchy of Bohemia. In 1002, the duchy was an Imperial State of the Holy Roman Empire, and was renamed the Kingdom of Bohemia. In 1806, the Holy Roman Empire dissolved, and the Bohemian Kingdom became part of the Austrian Empire until 1867, and was then renamed the Republic of Czechoslovakia in 1918. On January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split into 2 independent states: the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
