The northern European region, spanning Central and Western Europe is known as Germany. This country’s history can be traced back to before AD 100. Germanic tribes migrated throughout the lands, expanding towards the south. By the 10th century, German territories were part of the Holy Roman Empire. The German Confederation formed in 1815, after the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1871, German states united to form the Great German Empire. From 1933-1945, the Nazi party siezed control of Germany’s government. After World War II, West Germany and East Germany were established. Communist rule in Germany ended in 1989, and Germany was unified on October 3, 1990, and officially became the Federal Republic of Germany.
