Germanic tribes migrated throughout the lands, expanding towards the south. By the 10th century, German territories were part of the Holy Roman Empire. The German Confederation formed in 1815, after the fall of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1871, German states united to form the Great German Empire. From 1933-1945, the Nazi party seized control of Germany’s government. After World War II, West Germany and East Germany were established.
