Egypt is officially known as the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and the southwest corner of Asia. Egypt has one of the longest histoires and can be traced back to 6th-4th millennia BCE. Ancient Egypt is considered a cradle of civilisation, with many early developments such as: writing, agriculture, urbanization, organized religion, and a central government. As a center of Christianity, Egypt was later Islamised in the 7th century, and is currently a predominatly Muslim country. Between the 16th century and 20th century, Egypt was ruled by the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire. In 1922, Egypt established a monarchy, gained independence from the British Empire, although British military continued to occupy the land. Later in 1952, a revolution took place and British occupation ended, the monarchy was overthrown and Egypt declared itself as a republic. The official religion is Islam, and Arabic is the official language. A large region of the Sahara desert lies west of the Nile River in Egypt.
