Grenada is an island chain in the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea, and known as the “Island of Spice,” due to its nutmeg and mace plantations. The islands were discovered by explorer Christopher Columbus in 1498, and were kater colonized by the French in 1650. In 1763, the islands were ceded to Britain. On February 7, 1974, Grenada became an independent country.
