In the Soninke language, Ghana means “Warrior King.” Located in Western Africa, Ghana dates back to the 11th century, and was home to numerous kingdoms and empires. In the 15th century, many different European powers wanted to claim this coastal country for trade rights. Finally in the 1800’s Ghana was claimed by the British and named the British Gold Coast. On March 6, 1957, Ghana declared independence from the United Kingdom and was founded as the Republic of Ghana.
