Formerly French Guinea, after being colonized by the French during the late 1800’s, Guinea is now a predominantly Islamic country, with nearly 85% of the population being Muslims. This West African country declared its independence from France on October 2, 1958 and is now referred to as the Republic of Guinea. Guinea’s economy relies on bauxite (aluminum), minerals, diamonds and gold deposits.
