South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is a remote island group located in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. Discovered in 1775 by Captain James Cook, different islands in this archipelago became a British Overseas Territory between 1775 and 1908. Due to its remote location and a polar weather, this region is the least populated of all the British Overseas Territories, most of whom are government officers and research scientists. The islands’ economy rely upon the toothfish industry.
