Guam is an unincorporated United States island territory located in the Western Pacific Ocean. Discovered by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, the island country of Guan was founded on April 27, 1565. Guam was later settled by Spain in 1668, who then ceded Guam to the United States in 1898. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese captured the island of Guam after the attack on Pearl Harbor. On July 21, 1944 The United States recaptured the island territory. Guam’s motto is, “Where America’s Day Begins,” due to its location close to the International Date Line.
