Located on the west coast of Africa is the tropical country of Guinea-Bissau. During the 19th century Guinea was colonized by the Portuguese. On September 24, 1973, the Republic of Guinea-Bussau was founded and became independent from Portugal. In 1974 the capital Bissau was added to the name to avoid confusion with the country French Guinea, and the country was named the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.
