Hong Kong is located in Southern Asia on the coast of the China mainland. Originally the region of Hong Kong was mostly fishing and farming villages. In 1842, Hong Kong was a colony of the British Empire, and was a British territory for 99 years. On July 1, 1997, this territory was then transferred to China. Hong Kong is officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, and has a separate government and economic system from China.
