In 1842, Hong Kong was a colony of the British Empire, and was a British territory for 99 years. On July 1, 1997, this territory was then transferred to China. Hong Kong is officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, and has a separate government and economic system from China.
