The island known as Iceland, is a Nordic country, located in the North Atlantic Ocean. Iceland has a tundra climate and is a volcanic region, made up of lava fields, mountains and glaciers. It is believed that a Norwegian chieftain settled in Iceland in 874 AD. More Norweigians and Scandonavians continued to settle during the following centuries. In 1397, Iceland became part of the Kalmar Union, and was ruled by the Danes and then the Swedes. After the French Revolution, Iceland struggled for independence in 1918. On June 17, 1944, Iceland was founded as an independent country.
