The island country of Jamaica is located in the Caribbean Sea. In 1494, Christopher Columbus claimed the island for Spain until 1655. When Great Britain overtook the island it was renamed to Jamaica, and set up plantations and began exporting sugar. With the end of slavery in 1838, he British used indentured labor workeds on the plantations to continue exporting sugar. On August 6, 1962 Jamaica became independent from Great Britain and was founded as a country. Jamaica is famous for diving and snorkeling along their coral reefs and is the birthplace of reggae music and the Rastafarian religion.
