The Republic of Lithuania, is located in Europe in the Baltic region. On July 6, 1253, the Kingdom of Lithuania was created. During the 14th century, Lithuania laid claim to many other Baltic areas, forming the largest European country of its time, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1569, Poland and Lithuania formed a union that lasted for over two centuries, however between 1772-1795, the Russian Empire claimed this territory as its own. Nearing the end of World War 1, Lithuania gained independence and was founded as a country on February 16, 1918.
