The Baltic country of Latvia is located in Northern Europe with a history dating back to 9000 BC. Vikings, Nordic and Germanic traders settled in this territory sometime in 1 AD, establishing a trade route into Europe. This region played an important role in the trade market, and with that, was ruled by different countries throughout the years. During the 13th-20th centuries, Latvia fell under foreign rule. The region of Latvia was occupied by early German tribes, then became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and later part of the Swedish and Russian Empires. The Republic of Latvia was established on November 18, 1918, at the end of World War I. The Republic of Latvia became independent of Russian rule on August 21, 1991.
