This chain of volcanic islands lies slightly west of the International Date Line, between Hawaii and the Philippines in the central Pacific Ocean. This area has been used as a ship graveyard, and has become a popular dive site with coral reefs and marine life. In 1982 the Republic of the Marshall Islands was established.
