Russia, officially known as the Russian Federation, is the world’s largest nation and a transcontinental nation, bordering both European and Asian countries. The medieval state of Rus was founded by the Varangian warrior elite and their descendants in the 9th century. In 988 the synthesis of Bzyantine and Slavic cultures, defined Russian culture for the next thousand years. The lands of Rus, were invaded by the Mongols and became tributaries. During the 13th century, expansion through conquest, annexation and exploration, created the Russian Empire. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic formed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), which became the first constitutionally socialist state in the world. In the 20th century, during the Soviet Era, Russia created the first human-made satellite and launched the first humans to space. Russia has massive mineral and energy resources, and is one of the leading producers of oil and natural gas. On December 25, 1991, the Soviet Union dissolved and Russia was formally recognized as a country.
