Just north of the equator in Southeast Asia, lies the island city-state of Singapore, whose territory consists of one main island and 62 additional islets. Between 1819-1858, colonial Singapore was a trading post of the British East India Company. Soon after, the islands were ceded to the British Raj as a crown colony. In 1963, Singapore joined Malaysia with other former Biritish territories, and gained their independence. On August 9, 1965, Singapore became a sovereign state, and officially became the Republic of Singapore and a founded country. Singapore has the highest religious diversity, and has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil.
