Sometime between the 5th and 6th centuries, the Slavs settled in the region known now as Slovakia. During the mid 13th century this territory in Central Europe, was invaded and destroyed by the Mongols. Slovakia later became part of the Czechoslovakia Union of 1918. From 1948 to 1989, Czechoslovakia was under Communist rule. After a peaceful dissolution with the Czech Republic, Slovakia was founded on January 1, 1993 as an independent country.
