São Tomé and Príncipe is an African island nation near the equator line. These islands are part of a volcanic chain, with diverse landscape and habitats. Discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century, São Tomé and Príncipe were not settled into the 16th century. Due to its volcanic soil and location, this region was ideal for sugar, cocoa and coffee crops. On July 12, 1975, the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe was founded.
