Togo is one of the smallest countries in Africa. Many tribes called this territory home from the 11th-16th centuries. During the 16th-18th centuries, at the height of the European Slave Trade, Togo was part of the “Slave Coast.” In 1884 Togo fell under German rule, then was ceded to France. The West African country the Togolese Republic, gained independence from France and was established on April 27, 1960.
